The tide may be turning even with politicians and not only Mamdani

JVL Introduction

As we have often said, the people are increasingly in support of Palestinians and even in the USA more people sympathise with Palestinians than with Israel and recently a poll of US Jews showed that Zohran Mamdani was more popular than Netanyahu.

It seems that politicians are starting to catch up with the people they are supposed to represent – and also the justice and human rights that they proclaim to believe in. The leadership now needs to catch up with things too.  The article below shows just how widespread the shift is amongst Democrat politicians and The Jerusalem Post is worried, heading an article “Why distancing from Israel is becoming an asset for Democrats” and noting that: “In Washington, 103 House Democrats – 48% of the caucus – voted in favor of a House amendment to eliminate all US military aid to Israel. Another 10 abstained.” and also that Pat Ryan (D-New York) immediately followed that vote by declaring on X/Twitter that he no longer wanted support from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.”

House Democrats are finally shifting on Israel. Party leaders must listen

More than 100 Democratic lawmakers voted against arms for Israel. They’re listening to the people – their bosses are behind

  • Trump won his presidency in 2024 because the leaders of the Democrats (Biden and Harris included) thought it safer to ignore their activist volunteers and much of their voting base than to take the risks of upsetting donors and older Americans with an attachment to Israel. I’ve read that decision cost them a million votes, in an election where the winner’s majority was very slim.

Given the sheer hell Trump has unleashed on the world, I find it very difficult to forgive Biden and Trump for their timidity.

I don’t think any of us would blame US voters for NOT voting for the Democrats. There were American families who’d lost up to a hundred of their Palestinian relatives to Israel’s genocide. Thinking of my own family, I’d never vote FOR a political candidate facilitating their murder, however dreadful the alternative candidate was.

We can only hope the Democrats settle on policies and leaders whom Americans CAN support in the mid-terms. Congress must be so stuffed with Democrats that Trump and the Republican party is unable to govern, except with their consent to his programme. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Trump spent the rest of his time in office on the golf course ….
