The last Labour government passed a series of Immigration and Asylum Acts which got rid of all safe legal routes for people fleeing persecution and death. Therefore the system isn’t ‘broken’. It’s doing what it is intended to do: create an underclass of destitute scapegoats, criminalise many, make sure that several die (sometimes at sea, sometimes through refusal of medical care)… My objection to the ‘broken’ label is that it’s most often used by people who think an ‘unbroken’ system would succeed in the UK taking even fewer asylum seekers, an even tinier proportion of our fair share.
