The fight against New York’s Nazis in February 1939
JVL Introduction
Nathaniel Flakin tells the story, almost forgotten till recently, of how 50,000 antifascists rallied in protest against a large Nazi rally in New York’s Madison Square Gardens in February 1939.
What is unusual is that this counter demonstration was organised neither by the Communist nor Socialist Parties and was not supported by the radical Jewish press, Forward declaring: “Avoid the area around Madison Square Garden today and do not participate in any demonstration around the hall.”
It was the Trotskyist Socialist Workers’ Party which called the protest and its call was answered by vast crowds, met by the largest police force New York City had ever deployed against a single demonstration – to defend the Nazis’ right to “free speech.”
Indeed, Trotskyism in that period was enormously appealing to radical Jews show wanted to fight fascism and many socialist Zionists from Hashomer Hatzair became important Trotskyists – and anti-Zionists.

What is the source (and is there an online link to it) of “David Ben-Gurion declared:
If I knew that it would be possible to save all the children in Germany by bringing them over to England, and only half of them to Israel, then I would opt for the second alternative.”
Ludi,
there are many sources for Ben Gurion’s terrible quote. The most impeccable, from a Zionist point of view are Yoav Gelber’s
‘Zionist policy and the fate of European Jewry 1939-42’, p. 199 Yad Vashem Studies,, Vol. 13 citing the Minutes of a meeting of the Mapai Central Committee December 7, 1938, Mapai Archives at Beit Berl.
It is also cited in the official biography of Ben Gurion by Shabtai Teveth, The Burning Ground 1886-1948, Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1987, p. 855. The whole chapter in Teveth’s biography is worth reading because it lays bare the Zionist attitude during the Holocaust, viz. that everything must take second place to the building up of the State, the Holocaust included.
I have a copy of Gelber’s article which I can send anyone who is interested [email protected]
