Tareq Baconi: political failure, from revolution to despair

JVL Introduction

This fascinating interview with Palestinian author Tareq Baconi touches on a wide range of issues; from decolonisation, what South Africa has and has not achieved, what lessons can be learned from that struggle; the importance and value of memoirs and very much more.  A telling part for this web editor is this:

“I do not think we have sufficiently reckoned, on a political level, with how thoroughly the Palestinian consciousness of anticolonial revolution and liberation, dominant in the mid-twentieth century, has given way to defeat, corruption, and apathy among the leadership. Practically everyone understands that the Oslo Accords, and more generally the notion of partition in pursuit of the two-state model, have been designed to sustain Israeli apartheid and ensure Palestinian pacification. Over the past decade, culminating with October 7, we’ve been emerging from the interminable “peace process” discourse, which bought Israel time to pursue its settlement and annexation against the backdrop of endless talks.”

Accounts of the Struggle

“The work for Palestinians today is to explore how we can reclaim our revolutionary legacy and extend it into the twenty-first century.”

  • The “far right” means fascism. Fascism marks the end of viable elections. It destroys representational government and destroys the government’s separation of powers. What is so hard to understand about that? Obfuscation to one side, fascism is organized crime. Fascism is the privatization of government by private concerns, be those private concerns secular or theocratic, or both. The American Republican Theocratic Fascist Party is the enemy of Americans and America, of humanity, and of Life. What is so hard to understand about that? Under fascism private concerns rob all public assets, public holdings, and defund or privatize government services. Under fascism government agencies are sabotaged by appointing traitors at the “helm.” The aim of fascism is totalitarianism with impunity. The hallmark of fascism is Genocide. Trump is a criminally insane, stupid, cowardly psychopath, fascist traitor. What the heck is so hard to understand about that?
