Selective Memory

JVL Introduction

What lessons to draw from the Holocaust are dividing American Jews.

During the Presidential campaign and indeed during the Trump era more generally many progressive Jewish groups drew on Jewish legacies of resistance, saying such things as “It’s time to show that we’ve learned from the darkest moments in history. Hate doesn’t stop itself—it must be stopped.”

Right-wing Jewish groups like the Republican Jewish Coalition were suitably outraged.

But the recent decision of  the Holocaust Memorial and Education Resource Center of Florida to display photos of mourners at the corner where George Floyd was murdered is deepening the divide in the American Jewish world.
