Racist riots: not new for people of colour
JVL Introduction
Starting with the much criticised Sewell Report from three years ago which claimed there was no institutional racism in the UK and that it was rather a model for other “white majority countries”, this piece from The New Arab outlines how predictable – or at least unsurprising – the riots were. Alba Kapoor of The Runnymede Trust heads up a section below as “how the UK Establishment enables racism”. I would go further in that the UK establishment has been built on racism, given that much of the supposed “greatness” of Britain is hankering back to the days of colonialism and dominance particularly over African and Asian peoples, land and riches.
This history needs to be told and understood; we need to be clear how current generations, who did not participate in colonialism, still benefit and are still operating within a framework within which Black and Brown lives matter less than those of white people. This has to change.
