Police protect illegal sales in Edgware
JVL Introduction
The government is giving the police ever increasing powers to disrupt and prevent peaceful protest. A new report from Netpol (The Network for Police Monitoring) documents how they are already failing in their duty to protect peaceful anti-Zionist protesters from violent counter-protestors.
Edgware United Synagogue shamefully allowed its premises to be used for the ‘Great Israeli Real Estate Event’ which was promoting the sale of properties in illegal Israeli settlements, in breach of British law. This criminal enterprise was protected by both the police and a large contingent of far-right thugs, Jewish and non-Jewish. A smaller group of protesters, including many anti-Zionist Jews gathered opposite the synagogue.
Netpol’s report gathers testimonies of the violence and injuries inflicted on the protestors; the failure of the police to halt the attacks; and the arrests, not of the perpetrators but of the victims. The Met compounded their failures at the event by issuing totally misleading reports of an ‘intimidatory march’ though a Jewish neighbourhood. This was actually the police escorting protestors back to the tube on a route determined by the police which unnecessarily went along residential roads where many Jewish families live.
