Palestine Action might the courts help?

JVL Introduction

Today the government included Palestine Action in this draft statutory instrument proposing its addition to the list of proscribed organisations under the Terrorism Act 2000. Meanwhile human rights and free speech orgaisations as well as Artists for Palestine and many prominent individuals continue to object. “Kellys Solicitors, which represents several Palestine Action activists, says a ban would set a “terrifying precedent” that “constitutes an unlawful, dangerous and ill thought out attack on freedom of expression and assembly”.

A Judge has today granted an urgent hearing for the organisation to  try to stop this going ahead; we reproduce this article from the Guardian’s Legal Correspondent who has already written several  pieces since the announcement of the ban.

In her submission Huda Ammori, Co-founder of Palestine Action noted: “extensive consultation has taken place with the Israeli government and arms companies … no opportunity has been provided for other groups affected or concerned by the proposal to proscribe Palestine Action, including Liberty, Amnesty International and other civil society organisations”.

Meanwhile the film How to Kill A War Machine about Palestine Action is being downloaded across the world and “Showings of the film have been lined up across Britain in the coming days and weeks – from gatherings in homes through to screenings at cinemas”.  Might this lead to further criminalisation under anti-terror laws?

It is also worth noting that today the High Court rejected a challenge to the exporting of UK-made F-35 parts to Israel. (An appeal is likely on this)
