Our vision of liberation this Passover must include Palestinians
JVL Introduction
As we gather around the seder table, Rabbi Brant Rosen rabbi of Tzedek Chicago, an anti-Zionist synagogue, says it is not enough simply to tell the story of our liberation from Egypt.
We have to ask what it should mean for us today, in the context of the upheavals we are witnessing in Israeli society.
The demand for restoring Israeli democracy is all very well but Israel, as a Jewish nation-state, systemically denies basic civil and human rights to all non-Jews who live under its control.
Selective liberation indeed.
Rosen find parallels in the “selective liberation” story of the American revolution, built on the genocide of the indigenous inhabitants and the enslavement of millions of Black people.
“This Passover,” he concludes, “it is clearer than ever before that we need a new Jewish liberation story: one that is inseparable with the vision of liberation for all.”
