Israel’s ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians in 1967

All too often the Nakba is thought of as a short event in the years 1947-48 when around 750,000 Palestinians were forced from the homes and, despite United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194, not allowed to return.

Of course it was not a single event but an ongoing reality as Israel has relentlessly pursued its drive for as much territory as possible with as few Palestinians as possible.

Mainly it is done on a small scale, slowly, over time by making life impossible for Palestinians e.g. in their villages in the South Hebron hills or the Jordan Valley. But when the opportunity arises for large scale displacement Israel seizes it.

That’s what happened in 1967 when Israel gleeful seized the opportunity of war to push a further 300,000 Palestinians from their homes as well as 130,000 Syrians .

This account by Zachary Foster analyses what happened and highlights the intentional nature of the expulsions as well as the scale and massive cruelty involved in carrying them out.
