Israeli soldier executes Israeli hero – Haaretz editorial
JVL Introduction
“Opening fire at the scene of an incident is a means of eliminating a danger, not a punitive measure. It was only a matter of time before a tragedy like what happened to Kestelman took place.”
Thus a Haaretz editorial on the tragedy that befell Israeli hero Yuval Doron Kestelman who killed those involved in a terrorist attack and was then executed, under the mistaken assumption that he was one of the terrorists.
As more and more guns are distributed to civilians – Netanyahu and Ben-Gvir’s latest call – such incidents, where those who intervene in security incidents could be suspected of being terrorists and shot dead, are bound to increase.
It is a product of a mentality which accepts that a suspected terrorist, even when presenting no threat, deserves to be executed on the spot.
