In Washington, a debate grows over conditioning aid to Israel

JVL Introduction

The tectonic plates are shifting slowly.

US military aid to Israel, a topic for long too holy to be raised, is slowly forcing itself on to the agenda.

It is not just the scale of the aid which is staggering – over $3bn per annum and increased in the last days of the Obama administration to $3.8bn p.a. for the next ten years.

It is the fact that is unconditional – and 300 US legislators recently signed a letter demanding it remain so.

As human rights lawyer Zaha Hassan, told Al Jazeera: “When you’re sending $3.8bn per year, how can you say you don’t want to have any knowledge of how that money’s being spent? It becomes sort of a really ridiculous discussion because it becomes clear that any questioning of US assistance to Israel – any kind of tracking, tracing, monitoring or accountability – is going to be fought tooth and nail.”

  • Indeed, very pleased to see the ‘tectonic plates’ of public opinion are beyond the control of the Israeli government and all their efforts at lobbying, pressurising, and slandering their critics.

But it is they themselves who provide the main force pushing these tectonic plates. As their abandonment of a two state solution becomes obvious to more and more people, and the more people see the thuggish fascistic behaviour of some of their supporters, and hear the racist ideology from their ambassadors, they are unwittingly self-vilifying and isolating themselves.
