If Yoav Gallant was considered too conciliatory, what now?

JVL Introduction

Published on the day of the US Election and so before the results were in, this is still an important read.  It is telling that Mondoweiss sees Yoav Gallant  as the best hope for some restraint, even though this is a man who referred to the people of Gaza as “human animals” for whom blocking all food, water and more was right. It does seem clear that Netanyahu wanted Gallant out before the election result was known and, provoking large protests, he has now been sacked.

The USA under Biden and Harris has provided non stop support  for the genocide and it is worth noting that Biden did not  move the US Embassy back to Tel Aviv or even West Jerusalem to show his commitment to the “two state solution”.  Now that Trump has convincingly won the Presidency, is there anything or anyone left to stop Israel continuing its carnage and ethnic cleansing?

Gallant’s inexperienced replacement “[Yisrael] Katz was transparently appointed (as Defence Minister – Ed) so Netanyahu would effectively have full control over the Defense Ministry, while Gallant’s firing was retribution and a very loud warning to anyone from his governing coalition who might consider going against him on crucial legislation.” It is clear that nothing matters to Netanyahu so much as holding the fragile coalition together that should keep him in office.

What Netanyahu’s firing of Yoav Gallant means for Gaza, Israel’s regional war, and the US-Israel relationship

Benjamin Netanyahu’s firing of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has removed the one minor restraint on expanding Israel’s regional war against Iran and the axis of resistance. International pressure to stop Israel is needed now more than ever.

  • With Trump now President even the weak pressure applied by the US to date will stop. There will be no ‘pressure’ at all from the US.
