Orly Nor writes in +972 Magazine about the shocking treatment of one of the Hebrew University’s Professors, Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, a prominent legal scholar and a Palestinian citizen of Israel.
Already under suspicion for demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and describing the war as a “genocide” back in October, she has now been suspended for expressing her critical views on a podcast.
The accusation against her which has led to her suspension without a hearing, is of expressing herself in a “disgraceful, anti-Zionist, and inciting” manner.
Academic freedom which the university claims to be proud to protect, obviously cannot encompass views that go against the grain, especially anti-Zionism.
Would that it were the only instance of political persecution and militaristic indoctrination at the Hebrew University…

The idea that a university teacher should “find another academic home that matches her positions” tells you everything you need to know about the abandonment in Israel of standards of fearless honesty in research.
In a way, though, it’s like the capitalist idea of “free press” – if you don’t like a paper, buy different one. If there isn’t one to reflect your views, start one that does.
