Global powers complicit in Sudan’s endless suffering

JVL Introduction

Horrifying reports from Sudan have drawn attention to a battle between rival militias that has for years been causing untold suffering to millions of Sudanese, with global complicity.

Palestinians’ fight for survival against an Israeli state openly championed by the US and other western governments is rightly the focus of most of our attention. But we cannot ignore or neglect the Sudanese people. We should not be misled into accepting a false choice between the SAF and RSF militias, nor should we be taken in by propaganda that seeks to legitimise either side.

Focusing solely on the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) role in arming, funding and sustaining the RSF’s war machine allows Western powers, Gulf monarchies and regional regimes to hide behind empty statements of “concern” while continuing to profit from the war.

This analysis from the Middle East North Africa Solidarity Network argues that both militias are enemies of the people’s 2018 revolution, both equally criminal and both obstacles to revolutionary change.

  • So glad JVL has published this. I admire MENA Solidarity, which was started during the Arab Spring of 2011. It would also be valuable to get info from people less aligned to any political party and perhaps closer to the lived experience of Sudan… Meanwhile I have signed MENA’s letter to the PM, hoping lots of other JVLers will do this too.
NB Unite the Struggles, a small campaign allied to the Ukraine Information Group, does have a few links to Sudanese democracy activists as well.
