Evicting Palestinians from East Jerusalem

JVL Introduction

Palestinians living in East Jerusalem are always under threat.  The latest is for the Batn Al-Hawa district of Silwan, just outside the Old City.  This article highlights the likely eviction of 700 people even though they have lived in their homes for decades.  Israeli law, as explained below, allows Jewish claims but not Palestinian ones.   However, there have been examples where Jews have been able to claim rights even though they are not descended from the original Jewish owners who, as in this case, sold their land to Palestinians before the foundation of the State of Israel.

Even though East Jerusalem was annexed by Israel immediately after the 1967 Six Day War, the Palestinian residents do not have full citizenship and can, for example, only vote in municipal and not national elections.

  • Not quite on topic but a welcome defeat for similar abuses of power:-

“Channel 4 to show BBC-commissioned documentary Gaza: Doctors Under Attack”
The film – which includes witness accounts from frontline Palestinian health workers in Gaza and documents attacks on hospitals and clinics – will now air on Channel 4 on 2 July at 10pm.

Contrast what Channel 4 and its Head of News & Current Affairs said about this film ,,,

CHANNEL 4: “Gaza: Doctors Under Attack” has been “fact-checked and compiled by Channel 4 to ensure IT MEETS CHANNEL 4 EDITORIAL STANDARDS AND THE OFCOM BROADCASTING CODE”.

Louisa Compton said “This is A METICULOUSLY REPORTED AND IMPORTANT FILM EXAMINING EVIDENCE WHICH SUPPORTS ALLEGATIONS OF GRAVE BREACHES OF INTERNATIONAL LAW BY ISRAELI FORCES… IT WAS IMPORTANT JOURNALISM IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST”

… with the weasel words of the unnamed BBC employee explaining why the BBC wasn’t going to show the film it had commissioned a year ago:-
    BBC: –

“We have come to the conclusion that broadcasting this material risked CREATING A PERCEPTION OF PARTIALITY that would not meet the high standards that the public rightly expect of the BBC.”

Please tell people who may want to see the film when it’s being aired.
