Confronting injustice: racism and the environmental emergency

JVL Introduction

In an important collaboration Greenpeace and the Runnymede Trust have partnered to produce a joint publication exploring how racism and the environmental crisis are intimately interlinked.

We repost Runnymede’s publicity announcement and the Introduction to the report here and link to the full text for download.

It says, in part:

  • “The environmental emergency and systemic racism go hand in hand. It’s a truth that has its roots in the horrors of colonialism, slavery and the gigantic plunder of resources from the global South.”
  • “But it didn’t end, nor is it happening far away. From London to Lagos, the legacy of these historic injustices lives on as people of colour are hit hardest by the environmental emergency.”

This is an important resource, bringing together a large amount of information and analysis and concluding that “Addressing these intersectional issues has become all the more crucial as the fights to end systemic racism and tackle the environmental crisis intensify.”
