Academic freedom and the harassment of David Miller

JVL Introduction

Free Speech on Israel has written to Professor Hugh Brady, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol.

In doing so, it sought to bring the considerable threat to academic freedom from acceding to the campaign to dismiss Professor David Miller to his attention.

We repost the FSOI letter below.

You will find an official JVL statement on David Miller and academic freedom here.

  • Zionists believe they have a god given right to eject Palestinians from their homeland and occupy it. This is the crux of Zionism which any sensible person, let alone Prof David Miller, will acknowledge is absolute nonsense. If anyone is hurt by having the Zionist myths challenged it’s hard lines. What they are not entitled to do is attempt to smear anyone who disagrees with them. A feeling of entitlement no matter how strongly felt, is not a defence against criticism. In fact Zionism has been classed by some as a mental illness, it being the delusion of having rights which do not exist.

  • Surely this is testing time for the UCU. It is almost impossible to imagine a case where academic freedom is so clearly at risk. All UCU branches must rise promptly and loudly to the occasion and defend Professor Miller. We need to know the names of the c 100 (?) parliamentarians who so keen to emulate the Nazi bookburners of the 1930s.

  • I must admit it is no surprise seeing the names of many of the “Parliamentarians” who affixed their names to that disgraceful letter.

There is more than one name on there that has proven previous links to violent Far Right groups. Others are well-known lobbyists for dictators and other murderous, autocratic regimes.

How Caroline Lucas can bear to see her name amongst them is beyond me. I can only think that she has been extremely naive.

  • Have any of these individuals or groups who have accused him of anti-semitism reported him to the police? And if not, why not?!

  • And given the report by King’s College London for the Government’s ‘Independent Adviser’ on Antisemitism Lord John Mann regarding Skwawkbox and The Canary, surely they should have been reported to the police as well, not least by John Mann himself. That said, these left-wing blogs are no doubt monitored on a daily basis by the likes of the CAA and/or LAA and and/or JLM, and if there was anything to the claim that they are promoting “heavily negative coverage of Jewish issues”, why have they not been reported to the police long before now – ie at the time such alleged articles were published and posted. Doesn’t add up of course!
