This article by Amira Hass for Ha’aretz, paints a most depressing picture for Palestinians’ future – and I would argue for Israel’s too. It is bleak but in a way says what we all know. Is there hope? Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories. argues that our protests, the movement is making a difference but from the West Bank where Ms Hass spends most of her time and linked to Israeli society and politics as she is things look very bleak. Just today, the Daily Mirror, a very mainstream news outlet, published that Israeli troops ‘demolish Palestinian homes in West Bank village as heavily armed forces seen moving in’
Although the article does refer to settler violence, what they headline and focus on is mainly that “Soldiers were seen raiding the area with heavy machinery as they stripped out properties in al-Taban in Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron.” and that “According to reports, they prevented residents from removing their belongings before almost a dozen homes were wrecked.”
We cannot afford despair but we can afford and must be clear about the totality of what is happening and why.

In the short term, Palestinians and their defenders might have to take up armed struggle against the colonists. Longer term, there will have to be an end to the idf. There can be a Palestinian military with Jews in it, but not a Zionist army, or ethnostate. Any settlers who can’t stomach one democratic Palestinian state can move elsewhere.
Gaza’s fighters are extremely brave and resourceful, true; they’ve retaken areas from the IDF in as little as 20 minutes after the IDF have “cleared” them. BUT … guerrilla forces armed only with rifles and the unexploded munitions of their enemies can at best harry the enemy and will survive only as long as they remain mobile (and invisible).
All of us are watching with horror and disgust while the IDF and settlers continue killing the Palestinians and Lebanese, destroying their neighbourhoods and forcing them off their lands. Regrettably, I think the only realistic tactic the victims (and we) have is to wait.
Most war analysts think Iran has defeated Israel and the US and done so much damage to America’s ME bases the US can’t afford to rebuild them. The US-Israel alliance is much weakened. The new Mecca Accord members (all hostile to Israel) MAY work together better in the future. All three developments could force Israel into retreating behind the 1967 borders.
