Holocaust scholar Amos Goldberg, a professor in the Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is clear – Israel’s actions in Gaza have “the characteristics of most acts of genocide that have occurred in modern history. We must look this in the face and hold those responsible to account.”
Commenting critically on an earlier article in Ha’aaretz, Goldberg calls the genocide in Gaza “a symbolic event of the 21st century, channelling all struggles for justice, freedom and equality towards it.”
He challenges Israel and its supporters: “We must also examine the very foundations of our existence, the path of Zionism and the State of Israel since the Nakba, and indeed modern Jewish history.”

An important article to share. Goldberg is being courageous to write this in Israel.
It’s not only Jewish culpability in “ How does the victim become the perpetrator of the crime?” It’s also the supine complicity of the west in the Israeli crime of genocide and “the intensity of its murderousness, the depth of the sadism that has taken hold of it, the collapse of the justice system, the complicity of state institutions and most sectors of society, the extreme dehumanisation that has taken over public discourse, and the profound moral crisis in which the Israeli public finds itself.
All this and still there is the equation of Jew with victim.
Genocide is genocide. No matter how one tries to rearrange the truth the fact exist.
Does race play apart in why this is not genocide for some?
I think the next question I would ask how many of these perpetrators actually have family that were affected by the holocaust? Say for instance Benjamin ‘Mieliekowsky’ Netanyahu or say Ben Gvir?
And those perpetrators that were affected clearly have not learnt lessons from the past.
The ideology of European nations is the ‘holocaust’ belongs to one group of European people and they have a monopoly on this.
Holokauston has repeatedly happened throughout history. But that is the history not taught in schools. First Nations, Slaves , Armenia, Namibia (with the Germans), East Timor etc have experienced holokauston.
Israel uses the holocaust and this ‘victim’ status (which is very dangerous) to justify their actions. It is an ‘allowed’ exceptionalism of Israel and holocaust. These have horrific consequences for the indigenous populace.

The question that is asked is ‘‘How does the victim become the perpetrator of the crime?’ The short answer is that Israel has never been the victim. It was the Jews of Europe who were the victims.
Israel claims to inherit the memory of the murdered European Jews whereas today it is abundantly clear that it inherits the memory of those who killed them.
Zionism was based on the same principles as those of the murderers of the Jews – racial purity and racial hygiene, lebensraum, racial supremacy. That was why the German Zionist Federation could write to Hitler on 21 June 1933, in all sincerity that ‘we, too, are against mixed marriage and are for maintaining the purity of the Jewish group’
One part of the struggle against Zionism is stripping away Israel’s claim to victimhood because it is that victimhood that is providing the justification and legitimation for today’s genocide.

I read the “Times of Israel” and post on it when I can (please join me!!!).
The impressions I’ve got of the readership of what seems to be an excellent, “establishment” type national newspaper are that:-
– the readership clings so tightly to its comfort zone they refuse to give headroom to much ToI news
(Eg for months we’ve read about the slow collapse of US support for Israel and how that will play out. The ToI readership generally insist nothing significant has changed; the US superpower needs tiny, US subsidised Israel much more than Israel needs the US; and Israel should do what suits it best, even if the US hates that)
– much of the readership holds views about “Arabs” (Palestinians and others) and “Arab” nations which equal those of the Nazis, Boers and Spanish Conquistadors for viciousness, racism and complete lack of human empathy
– much of the readership knows (or wants to know) nothing more of their state’s foundation and history (1890s to now) and of their own religion than the propagandised, factually untrue versions they absorbed at school. Given the crises through which Israel is struggling this seems BIZARRE to me!
– there’s no respect for facts, either as a support for an argument or in rebutting one. The aim is to “win” an argument by exhausting the opponent with distracting ploys, by verbal abuse or by putting forward untruths (which the debater may know are untruths).
While the principal victims today are the Palestinians and Israel’s neighbours, it does seem to me that ordinary Israelis have themselves been betrayed by their own leaders.
