Palestinian prisoners suffer more for seeking justice
JVL Introduction
Over 10,000 Palestinians are incarcerated by Israel, over 3,000 of whom, including Dr. Abu Safiyah, are held hostage without charge. We have posted before about the horrendous levels of torture meted out to imprisoned Palestinians but now it seems that daring to have legal representation and filing an appeal will make things even worse.
“…Abu Safiya told his lawyer, Nasser Odeh, during a prison visit on July 2, that following an appeal filed with the Israeli Supreme Court at the end of April, the assaults and abuse against him escalated dramatically. Abu Safiya told Odeh that after a court hearing in June, where he appeared via a video link looking gaunt, several prison guards entered his cell and beat him with batons and a hammer.”
Dr. Abu Safiyah is one of more than 80 health workers still held by Israel and this article also reports on the fears of others and how they feel constrained from action for fear that if they make a stand they will make prison even harder for their loved ones.
This is a tough but important read.
