No Room for Genocide in 500 Italian Establishments

Take heart from this powerful campaign that is gaining support and standing firm against the inevitable complaints. Five hundred hospitality businesses and organisations are backing the “No Room for Genocide” and the related “Spaces free of Israeli Apartheid” initiatives. For example, hotels ask guests making a booking whether or not they support the Netanyahu government and are clear that they will not welcome people who do.
In resisting the complaints most share the view of Nives Monda who owns a Taverna in Naples. She carried on speaking out after her restaurant was targeted and appealed to other businesses and cultural associations to join in stating that “It is our duty to take a stance and do what we can to end all chains of complicity that enable Israel’s genocide in Gaza.”
Another business owner who displayed a Palestinian flag on her B&B responded to a one star review left by a Swedish couple in which she was attacked for her pro-Palestinian views “…with a powerful public rebuttal: her Jewish grandfather had lived through the Shoah and descendants of hers had been killed in the holocaust; the values of her household were freedom, democracy, equality, and antifascism… she reserved the right to refuse potential war criminals. The review was an attempt to punish political speech and to weaponize Jewish identity against solidarity with Palestine.”

The campaign of harassment directed against them is an attempt to reimpose silence and complicity. It will not succeed for as long as people of conscience continue to answer

So pleased to read about this non-violent – even educational – grassroots approach to challenging and helping to end Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians.
Talking to one individual at a time gets the point across – each of us can and should do what’s possible to stop murder, torture, unjust detention, theft and apartheid on what’s an almost unimaginable scale of horror. There are no moral holidays from our responsibility as human beings to every other person.
Here in France I find myself constantly struggling with the fear that the forces of truth and justice are fighting a losing battle. Initiatives like this reassure me that the pushback against the crimes of Israel is far more widespread and more determined than traditional media commonly acknowledges.
