…and on the day after – how (and who) to rebuild.
JVL Introduction
This will, one day, stop. There may even be a ceasefire soon and while that will not be the end of the “conflict” it is important to think about what comes next for the people of Gaza. Here the online journal Mondoweiss interviews representatives of Hamas to find out about their own vision for the future, for rebuilding.
There are other thoughts too that may be of interest outlined in this New Arab article on “the day after” arguing that Israel will have the upper hand and that neither side has anything to gain from this continuing for much longer. All possible options for future governance in Gaza seem fraught with problems. According to these representatives, Hamas recognises it is not ideal – and perhaps not possible – to continue to govern alone. {Potential involvement of the Palestinian Authority seems further fraught given the role they are currently enacting in Jenin where the PA is suppressing resistance to the Israeli occupation.
But the day after will come and so options need to be explored and the people of Gaza’s needs, aspirations and control over their own lives must surely be paramount.

Doesn’t this rather miss the point that it is pretty clear – in both Israeli politicians rhetoric and the facts on the ground – that the intent is there (and not challenged by Israel’s US and European backers) to annex and resettle a significant amount of Gaza. So re-build where exactly?
