Son of Jewish Holocaust survivors arrested for supporting Palestine

JVL Introduction

On Friday, November 1st, Professor Haim Bresheeth was arrested, ostensibly for supporting proscribed terrorist organisations.  However, he did no such thing as is clear from listening to his speech embedded within this article from Skwawkbox.

This is yet another attempt to clamp down on free speech when it comes to support for Palestinians, or perhaps even more to the point, heavy criticism of Israel.  This time of an Israeli Jewish man who was born in a displaced person’s camp one year after his parents were liberated from the death camps. Below this summary from this blogger, we also publish a statement by Haim’s partner Yosefa Loshitzsky with links she has asked to be shared.  “It is precisely because his family history and the intimate knowledge from his parents that he is compelled…to oppose this ongoing genocide.  Our history, …is at the heart of our beliefs, and in the case of Haim and myself, our scholarly publications and political activity. ”

Our solidarity with Haim and our solidarity with people who have been arrested and others, who may well be concerned at their own possible arrest.  But none of them – or us – will stop until the genocide, occupation and siege is over.

Britain is counting Jewish-Israeli academics as terrorists now

Only if they object to genocide, of course

  • Our imposed upon us dictatorial, hypocritical and ignorant government is an all-round disgrace. It is settting a standard of dishonesty for others to follow. .

  • Well, I hope that if Haim is charged, his legal representative asks the cop who arrested him to explain exactly where and when Haim expressed support for a proscribed group and which one. That should prove an interesting listen. Apart from anything else, Haim referenced three proscribed groups in EXACTLY the same way – saying that Israel wouldnt be able to defeat any of them. Which of them is he supposed to have expressed support for?! Why one but not all of them?! And if he isn’t charged, I reckon a complaint to the Met itself and to the IOPC itself wouldn’t come amiss. Even an action for false imprisonment?

  • It’s appalling that a man with a history and parents who experienced the worst of humanity, having to face being arrested for speaking truth to power. With the “Terrorism Act” and a genocide-supporting Prime-Minister, I fear there will be many more people who are harassed and intimidated by Starmer`s and his Police forces, to try and instil fear into those who speak up. I have a feeling he won’t silence Professor Bresheeth and all those supporting the fight against the genocide of the Palestinians by Israel. Solidarity.

  • As a first time reader of articles on your website I have been both moved and impressed. May the voice of reason prevail. Thank you.
I have two general comments to make.
If the aim of Israel in Gaza is to destroy Hamas yet over 43,000 civilians have been killed, the IDF must rank as one the most incompetent armies in recent history.
It would be wonderful to see UN prosecute Israel for the death of each child in Gaza. A modest $50,000 per child as a starting point.
    Keep up your good work.

  • The only ‘crime’ for which Haim could be accused, is supporting Palestinians who are suffering genocide by Israel with the assistance of the despicable UK government.

  • I recommend leaving the pro genocide authoritarian UK and move to Ireland. They know how to deal with genocidal monsters.

  • I remember that during WW2, living in an occupied country, one was arrested for expressing support for Britain or the US. NOW ONE CAN BE ARRESTED FOR EXPRRESSING AN OPINION OR PRINCIPLE IN A COUNTRY THAT IS NOT AT WAR.

  • When I read of protesters, globally, facing arrest because they dare justly, to stand up for their fellow man, I am reminded of Algernon Sidney’s words:

We live in an age that makes truth pass for treason, and as I dare not say anything against it, so the ears of those that are about me will probably be found too tender to hear it. This my trial and condemnation do sufficiently evidence.

  • A bit late to the discussion, but regarding Naomi Wayne’s comments about the arresting officer, it was even more ludicruous. From the video of the Professor’s arrest :

“So you made a speech earlier. So you are being arrested under the Terrorism Act 2020 for Hate speech…..”

Hate speech is prosecuted under much earlier legislation. Obviously the jobsworths in charge of the ‘arrest’ realised this and the charge was changed to ‘supporting a proscribed organisation’ which does fall under the Terrorism Act. I don’t think we shall see any charges brought against Professor Bresheeth as even on technicalities it would surely fail.

We have become familiar with absolutely shameful behaviour by the Met, but who is behind the recent string of individuals being ‘picked off one by one’ it seems….

  • SHAME SHAME SHAME ON UK. This is completely nuts. All about ignorance, greed for power and money. Bravo JVL!
“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a TU.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.”
(then they came for the Palestinians, and I did not speak out-because I was not a Palestinian)
“Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me”.
