Jonathan Cook looks at the forthcoming hearings at The Hague where Israel stands accused of genocidal intent.
As he stresses, Israel expects support from western capitals because they too will be implicated in any findings against Israel, for having stood by, aiding and abetting the ongoing slaughter.
The Biden administration has been outright in its uncritical support for Israel, calling South Africa’s legal argument “meritless, counterproductive and completely without any basis in fact whatsoever”.
It obviously hasn’t read the detailed 84-page legal indictment and we can only hope that the ICJ is more rigorous in its appreciation of South Africa’s legal arguments when hearing open tomorrow, 11th January.

What an article! But I don’t share its pessimism regarding the effects of poor, restricted coverage of Gaza on ‘western’ audiences. America’s dismissal of South Africa’s genocide allegation relies, yes, precisely on Israel’s restriction of international journalists into Gaza – on top of the killing of so many Palestinian journalists there. Such blatant and violent censorship surely doesn’t go unnoticed in liberal loving countries like the US and UK. Besides such a clearly false narrative dismissing South Africa’s case doesn’t just spill out into a social, political vacuum but opens up serious inconsistencies from both the US and UK governments that can’t easily be explained away.
And here in the UK, where people are clearly reeling over ITV’s dramatization of the Post Office scandal – only the latest in a long line: Grenfell, Windrush, Hillsborough – how much are they really prepared to swallow of the MSM coverage of what’s happening in Gaza? And what goes down at the Hague?
