Gaza’s race against climate breakdown

JVL Introduction

We all know Gaza faces a bleak future.

Gaza faces a perfect storm, caught between humanitarian and environmental crises as this report in +972 Magazine makes clear.

Militarily hemmed in on all sides, and under non-stop drone surveillance, Gaza’s de facto repressive occupation is compounded by its fossil fuel dependency and a permanent and deepening water crisis as well

“Systematically speaking,” says Alexia Guilaume of Al-Haq, “Israel’s blockade is what deprives Palestinians from sustainably managing their natural resources and building climate resilience.”

It will only get worse…

Gaza’s race against climate breakdown

Amid a deepening climate crisis, Palestinians in Gaza are fighting to salvage their land and livelihoods. But repeated bombardments and an unrelenting blockade are devastating efforts to build climate resilience.

  • Not sure why Egypt is part of the blockade system. Am I missing something? I know Egypt and other nations are either scared of Israel or seeking alliance.

  • How can the world continue to tolerate the slow poisoning of a captive population in the service of a hostile state implicitly dedicated to their elimination? The defenders of Israel must surely know what is being done in their name – a population can’t claim not to be implicated in their government’s abuses if they deliberately avert their eyes from the evidence that is all around them. Sooner or later Israel will have to address its shameful history, though the way things are going that will only happen long after the Palestinians have been reduced to a demoralised remnant like the Native Americans.

  • This is a well researched and important article. I hope that you connect with the October 16th Group of young journalists in Gaza to find daily life stories which illustrate the points you are making.

  • If the problem of providing sustainable livelihoods is presented to a divided jurisdiction , each part under that division will be unable to trust the other with anything they might given, and unable to accept help from the other in any way it might be given. If there is only one territory within which different identities might flourish under a territorial law, which must respect a principle of equal rights to ownership of means to defend and maintain conditions of sustainable continuation of population under differing homeland jurisdictions, what could constitute the principles of such an equality? If the notion of such a principle exists in any abstract or ideal form other than religious auhority or mystical love, what forum or institution would conduct the work of decision – intending the equality and sustainability of the identity of the people under competing jurisdictions? Such attempts will be mocked by those who believe in natural law , or who have fought for territory according to what they believe is divine law. I am sorry to make such risible contribution. I see difficulties are greater for those who would help than for those who would settle for security and the economics of possession.
