Report on the general strike in Palestine

JVL Introduction

Two members of the Notes From Below Collective speak to Riya Al’Sanah, a research coordinator at Who Profits from the occupation economy research center, and a Palestinian activist based in Haifa.

This is a rare voice describing the reality on the ground among Palestinian Israelis in particular.

In the interview Al’Sanah describes the strike on 18 May as a political strike with economic implications, a strike called because of pressure from below.

She puts its significance graphically: “It wasn’t that Palestinians in Israel were going out on demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians being attacked in Gaza, it was asserting that we are part of the same struggle, and we have a fight to fight.”
