I am busy brushing up my Rumanian! When, many decades ago, I travelled with school and college friends across Eastern Europe, I guessed that even with O Level French we should be able to survive in Rumania, so long as one precaution was taken. As soon as we crossed the border, I asked a group of young Rumanians who were sat nearby, how to say in Rumanian – please speak slowly. My friends all scoffed – but it worked brilliantly and I managed some great conversations. So for anyone else who chooses this way, what you need to learn is: Vă rog să vorbiți încet.
