The Holocaust, the BBC and antisemitism smears

JVL Introduction

Jonathan Cook comes to the defence of the BBC’s Orla Guerin, under fire for her remark in passing about the Palestinians in a programme about the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation.

She has been accused of antisemitism, despite the fact that “At no point did Guerin make a comparison between the suffering of Jews in the Holocaust and the suffering of Palestinians.”

This, argues Cook, is part of a wider onslaught. Israel is ever anxious to accuse any western supporters of the Palestinians, indeed all  non-Jews, of harbouring the virus of antisemitism which can manifest itself at any time. A Jewish state is needed as “inoculation against a global plague of antisemitism”. Criticising it for anything it does then becomes, by definition, antisemitic..

  • Another colonial settler state is Liberia. This is interesting, as the state was formed by ex-slaves and black Americans suffering racism and under the auspices, in part, of white liberal anti-slavery campaigners (plus a lot of racists as well). The local population were pushed off their land and disenfranchised for nearly 140 years. No-one would ever think that criticising that set-up or even dismantling the regime (which happened by military coup in 1980) could be described as “racism”…..
