Room for optimism as US workers organise
JVL Introduction
There is plenty of room for optimism as US workers organise in their tens of thousands against fierce employer resistance.
Labor Notes in the United States issues an upbeat call to attend its Conference on June 17-19 in Chicago
It will be the biggest gathering out there of “grassroots union activists, worker centre leaders, and all-around troublemakers” in a long while.
Organiser Alexandra Bradbury writes: “There’s plenty to celebrate this year, starting with phenomenal new organizing wins at Starbucks and Amazon. Dozens of shop floor organizers from both companies will be there, including plenary speakers Amazon Labor Union President Chris Smalls and Michelle Eisen of Starbucks Workers United…”

I wrote this to counter the argument that it’s the Unions that are the enemy.
Unions are the creation of the ‘Working Class’. They were created to stop the abuse by unscrupulous bosses using them as cheap labour for their own benefits. Over the years they have fought for and taken us from a life expectancy of 47, 10hrs a day, 6 days a week and on poverty wages, no sick or holiday pay and no Company pension, to a 37.5hr 5 day week, paid holidays, paid sick leave and Company pensions. They also fought against bullying bosses who take advantage. We now have a life expectancy of around 80.
Many earned enough to buy their own homes, having your own car, money to spend on leisure activities, taking your families on holiday, even going abroad.
OR THEY DID, until Thatcher brought in Anti Trade Union legislation that truly weakened them.
Now we are slipping back fast, we now have over 2 million families using food banks, multi millions living on poverty wages, 2 million on zero hour contracts or forced to go self employed, losing sick and holiday pay, plus no Company Pension. The pathetic minimum wage becoming the norm with an estimated 4 million on it.
A total of 14+ million living in poverty, 9 million of them working, some having 2 or 3 jobs just to get by.
It can only get worse under a Fascist Tory Government.
Only a Labour Government led by ‘TRUE’ Socialists will repeal these vicious, vindictive Laws, so that Our Unions can win back all those things they had fought so hard to gain.
👍
It’s great to hear of successes for the trade union and Labour Movement worldwide.
… and good to hear that the “trouble-making wing of the labour movement” is, once again, alive and organising.
For too long, workers have been betrayed by many union leaders and leaders of the Labour Party who have had safe salaries, safe jobs and safe pensions, while workers on the front-line of the struggle have been super-exploited by unscrupulous employers who have had an easy time.
It’s good to see that the fight-back in the USA and Mexico is being led by rank-and-file shop-floor activists.
Solidarity with our brothers and sisters !
We must do everything in our power to support the “trouble-making wing” in our own country.
All my politics I learned on the shop-floor.
The company taught me which side I was on.
I was a good pupil and went on to be a workplace leader and organiser.
Every advantageous term and condition of employment that we enjoyed, and every pay-rise was won for us by collective organisation in our trade unions.
The class struggle is never-ending.
Its the only way to make the bosses listen !!!!
