How to help defeat ethnocracy
JVL Introduction
Meir Kahane was such an ethnic extremist that he was barred from the Knesset and his organisation declared to be a terrorist group by the USA. But that was then and now his followers like Itamar Ben-Gvir are accepted members of Israel’s political class; frequently given space to air their views on mainstream Israeli media; and attempting to play the role of king-maker in Israel’s evenly divided parliament. Divided not on politics but only on whether Netanyahu is a fit person to be Prime Minister.
Natasha Roth-Rowland explores how Ben-Gvir’s party, Otzama Yehudit (Jewish Power), thrives due to the prioritization of the idea of an ethnocratic Jewish state — with all the national, ethnic, and religious domination it implies — over the idea of a democracy.
