Edinburgh University may unadopt the IHRA

JVL Introduction

Edinburgh University is seriously considering divesting from Israel and unadopting the IHRA (so called) definition of antisemitism.  We have written extensively about what is wrong with this non definition and are delighted to learn that its rejection is being contemplated.

The article also makes the point that Lord Balfour – he of the Declaration – was closely associated with the University and that both his declaration and the Aliens Act that he promoted in 1905 are rooted in racism.

We can be sure that the apologists for Israel will be putting pressure on the University not to take this important step. We suggest that people write offering encouragement to them to go ahead. [email protected]

  • This is on a par with the British government warning that the Israeli government ‘might be about to commit’ war crimes.

The changes have come about only because, I suspect, their legal advisors have pointed out that complicity with genocide is itself a crime. The authorities are constructing a defence along the lines of ‘as soon as we realized what was happening, we did, of course, take the appropriate action.’

Historians, I suspect, will be less generous in their judgements.
