At London Israel demo, calls to “burn” Palestinian villages

JVL Introduction

Asa Winstanley reports on the 23rd May London demonstration in support of Israel.

The good news is that it was derisory in scale, despite the best efforts of the organisers who included the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Zionist Federation.

The bad news is that it was overtly racist in tone and content.

Despite the Board dissociating themselves from Tommy Robinson’s presence it is clear that many of those who turned out are sympathetic to the kinds of views he expresses.

And the Board, quite happy to appear on the same platform as Tzipi Hotovely, racist ambassador to the Court of St James, is courting Robinson’s supporters at the same time as claiming to disown them.

  • “bad news” is the editorial comment on the fact that this pro-Israel demo was racist. Of course it was – a complete matter of course. “Mavet la aravim” was one of the chants, I gather ((death to Arabs); what is Hebrew for ‘may your village burn’? We need to listen out for such chants.
The ‘nice Zionist’abjured such an expression; preferring “you will live and we will live in your village”. Just look at Douglass’ Orderly and Humane (Yale U 2012) and see how the Nazis operated – dispossessing Polish peasants in this case. Young Melita Maschmann was grumpy at being expected to conduct the expulsions armed only with a clothes-hanger.. Need I say more?.
