Abuse, threats and vilification sent to The Muslim Vote
JVL Introduction
In December 2023, The Muslim Vote was established, largely modelled on Operation Black Vote the aim was to encourage Muslim voters to engage more in politics and to help raise issues of concern to Muslims in the UK. The assault on Gaza and the response of the Labour Party may have been the trigger but the issues of concern are much wider. This has horrified, if not terrified, the Establishment if this 7th July Telegraph headline – and article is anything to go by: Why the Muslim Vote campaign is a glimpse into a horrifying future which states “Group’s sectarian insurgency over Gaza succeeded in making a dent to Labour’s majority”.
The allegations of abuse and violence from the supporters of those candidates, especially the Muslim candidates, who stood on a platform that included an end to the war on Gaza have been appalling and there have even been allegations that Election abuse of candidates may have been coordinated (BBC News), which while it did not name Muslim voters was written in that broader context that support for Gaza were somehow extremists and included this reference “Labour lost votes to pro-Palestinian candidates, angry with the party’s position on the Israel-Gaza conflict.”
Finally there has been this piece in the Independent, highlighting some of the threats and abuse received by The Muslim Vote. We extend solidarity to our Muslim sisters and brothers and will continue to highlight Islamophobia and to work for it to end, along with all forms of racism.

Those who use abuse and threats are those without the ability to educate themselves on the hypocrisy that underlies much of “British values”. I can say that as someone born in and brought up in England of English/Welsh parents and as a survivor of World War II when learnt so much about how to manage times of austerity, to the lifetime benefit of most of us. Remain calm and NEVER respond in kind to abuse; the National Church of England supposedly preaches “Love your neighbour” of which some need reminding!
The irony of the far right Daily Telegraph becoming alarmed by a political movement that has ‘made a dent in Labour’s majority’ [JVL Introduction] would be amusing, if it were possible to be amused by anything in these dark days.
