Meta – still restricting the Palestinian narrative

JVL Introduction

Nearly two years after the report “Erased and Suppressed was published by the Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media and (even) the BBC had published evidence of Meta’s discriminatory practices (see here), another report has shown that Meta continues to discriminate against the Palestinian narrative. The researchers characterize what Meta is doing “as the structural erosion of Palestinian visibility and participation across major social media platforms.”

The period under investigation extended for more than a year beyond the previous reports and find no improvement and nearly half of the appeals about restrictions were not even answered.  In this article the impact on Palestinian journalists is particularly highlighted.

Examples of restrictions and what they term “platformicide” include: “account suspensions, removal of posts, restrictions on livestreaming and measures reducing the distribution and visibility of Palestinian content.”

  • I write poetry, frequently I share them across sites where I’m an active member and supporter. Equally, I make and share political comments. Whenever I post about Israel, Gaza or what is happening in the Middle East my accounts are blocked, posts limited or suspended. Sites where I am a known and active member are not allowed to receive or accept my posts …. the post are not abusive or threatening or even sweary ….. freedom!

  • META does discriminate according to race.So it shouldn’ be a surprise when it comes to Palestine.
    Algorithmic bias harms marginalised peoples/communities.
This is what the modern minute looks like. Have a care where you you choose to get your information from. It is an ugly beast that preaches untruth to the masses.

  • On Facebook I suggested that UK govt might consider supporting Hamas, Hezbollah, Houtis, Iran, as only active and viable opposition to Israeli fascism and genocide. Tongue in cheek of course and utterly improbable (perhaps) but was deleted as promoting terrorism.
