UKLFI at it again. This time it’s the vegans!

The Great Vegan gathering is not widely known for fomenting hatred against Jews for one simple reason. It doesn’t.

But UK Lawyers For Israel are undeterred.

It doesn’t like three of the bands who were due to perform at the gathering making allegations against them for the crime of having “aligned themselves publicly with anti-Israel campaigning”.

Yes, one band posted on Facebook: “What Hamas has done is atrocious. What Israel is doing is genocide.”

Another said, quite correctly that: “To equate solidarity with the Palestinian people with anything but the pursuit of justice stokes conflict and disrupts efforts for peace. It puts the Jewish community at more risk and silences Palestinian voices.”

And that for UKLFI is enough reason to spoil the most important social gathering in the vegan calendar.

But they had to have willing helpers. The Scout Association, whose venue was to have been used for the gathering until approached by UKLFI, somehow “finds actions taken by the event organisers… not consistent with Scout values”.

Under the guise of having to provide a “welcome inclusive, respectful and welcoming environment for everyone” those who support Palestinian solidarity are being shut down. So too are vegans in general.

It is outrageous that the Scouts should capitulate in this way. We can only hope that support for Palestinian rights will now become universal among vegans! And among others, nauseated by the Scouts’ cowardice.

Be prepared – to defend our freedom to assemble, to stand in solidarity with the Palestinians, for universal human rights?

Not us! We’re the Scouts!
