Israel intercepts Gaza flotilla 600 miles from Israel and detains 175 activists

JVL Introduction

In the early hours of Thursday 30th April 2026, boats from the Sumud flotilla were intercepted by Israel and at least 175 of the participants were kidnapped by that State’s forces and taken, without prior negotiation to Greece. The boats were even outside the territorial waters of Crete at the time and Crete is over 600 miles from Gaza and Israeli waters.

The article below describes what happened in some detail. More boats are still on the water but it seems unlikely that they will be “allowed” to get far. Some images on social media seem to show that some of the activists were beaten but this is yet to be confirmed.

Francesca Albanese called this act ‘Apartheid without borders,’ and posted this on X: “ALARM! How on earth is possible that Israel is allowed to assault and seize vessels in international waters just off Greece/Europe? Besides what you can think of Apartheid Israel and its genocidal leaders, this should send shock waves across Europe,”

Novara Media has also reported that Israel Smashes Boats, Strands and Kidnaps Flotilla Activists Near Greece and full details are not yet clear but what is clear is that this is an outrageous act against international and maritime law to prevent aid – and activists – from reaching Gaza and being eye witnesses to the conditions there.

The  Morning Star has also published on this and noted that: “Amnesty International senior director for research, advocacy, policy and campaigns Erika Guevara Rosas said the raid “underscores the dangerous consequences of decades of impunity for Israel’s ongoing atrocity crimes against Palestinians…(and)…The Israeli navy crossing hundreds of miles at sea to ensure civilian boats carrying food, baby formula and medical supplies don’t reach Palestinians reveals the lengths Israel is prepared to go to maintain its cruel and unlawful 19-year blockade of the occupied Gaza Strip.”

  • This shows Israel’s utter impunity to international law and that it operates as a terror entity anywhere it wants in the world. Where is the response from the UK and other countries whose citizens are on these life saving boats? Why has the UN not said anything and has not sent a warship to guide the flotilla into Gaza. As usual no-one has done anything to stop Israel in its gangster activities.

Turkey is prosecuting the perpetrators of an Israeli attack (a few months ago) on an earlier Freedom Flotilla. Hind Rajab Foundation has assisted the Turkish court by providing information on the names, ranks and actions of the IDF personnel engaged in this “piracy”.

IF Turkish law allows trials “in absentia” and IF the court rules that named defendants are guilty of their alleged crimes then presumably those individuals may be arrested and returned to Turkey to serve their sentences whenever it’s practicable to do so.

In the meantime, this Turkish prosecution may encourage other nations that have also begun similar prosecutions to move a bit faster. I believe other cases have begun in France and Spain (and maybe in Italy).
