Fueling antisemitism in the US
JVL Introduction
Trump may have given Israel almost unconditional support for its war on Gaza but the US far right is now increasingly split into two camps: those who are unwavering in their defence of Israel, no matter what Israel does; and those in the mainstream MAGA universe who are turning against it.
This has nothing to do with compassion for Palestinians or disgust at the Gaza genocide – which they see as liberal concerns. What has enraged them, says MJ Rosenberg is the perception of divided loyalty.
“They see the same “We Are One With Israel” proclamations from the ADL, AIPAC, and their chorus of pundits, and they react exactly as they did to Jews in the McCarthy era — with suspicion and contempt.”
This is traditional antisemitism. And the irony, writes Rosenberg is that the Jewish establishment, “in trying to prove that loyalty to Israel was the essence of Jewish identity”, has fostered the narrative that antisemites are now thriving on.
