Keir Starmer’s journey to Jewishness

JVL Introduction

In the latest episode of their video discussion series, Complaints on a Plate, Daniel Taylor and Heather Mendick have great fun as they speculate unrestrainedly over the significance of Keir Starmer’s prolific output of mini video vignettes about the Jewish faith, the Jewish community, and antisemitism.

All the videos gathered in one convenient place so you no longer have to search for them (as one does…)

  • There is no need for Starmer to convert to Judaism – after all most Zionists are Christians.

  • I care not one whit if Keir Starmer wishes to become a Jew, a Muslim or a Jain.

What I do care about is his personal ethos – his ethics and integrity – as leader of this Labour Party.

In the past thirty-two months, he has shown little of either, and that’s what concerns me.

He is not a socialist, which is the first and foremost requirement, for the position he holds.

Would someone have a look at his socialist qualifications, please.

  • Natalie Grazin is the woman holding the cup in the video about Peach/Passover. Natalie was brought up in Leeds and now lives and works in London. She also has a beautiful voice, and leads services at the New North London Synagogue. And you are right about dayenu… it would have been enough!

  • I appreciate Starmer’s good wishes for the Jewish community in the U.K. (about quarter of a million) expressed as an individual . He is , as a possible future Prime Minister, ignoring other religions and ethnicities which suffer racism . Anti Semitism is serious but Starmer sounds like he wants to be a leader of the Jewish community and definitely not a leader of all the people in the U.K.
(NB Daniel – Welsh people love it when visitors speak a little Welsh – it creates a wholesome connection . )

  • A question: Has Kier Starmer made any comparable videos to other cultural groups? If he has, then I would like to see them as well.

  • Every Labour Party membership card bears the legend” The Labour Party is a Democratic Socialist Party. The current leadership is neither democratic or socialist. Any member who professes to be a socialist immediately puts themselves at risk of expulsion or being banned from standing for office. This is a strange set of circumstances for a party which expects the public to trust them in government.

  • This must be the daftest article and thread ever posted on here.

Who cares about any of this bilge?

  • Who cares or wants to watch this? Obsessing about Starter’s views of Judaism / anti-Semitism is just distraction from opposing his Tory-lite economics and social policies as well as his flag-waving pandering to MSM

  • Anna – Starmer appears to want to be leader of
*part* of the Jewish Community and not all ..
given that a part of this Community have been
singled out and – at best – no platformed and at
worst purged for the Labour Party.

Sorry but I cannot bear to watch those videos – I
am a Christian and regard ourselves and Muslims
and Jews as all “Children of the Book” where the book
is what we Christians call “The Old Testament” or at
    least part of it. ***

Those familiar with “The book” will know that the
Prophets are not too keen on people in power who
oppress and deny justice to others. In fact they have
some fairly ripe criticisms of them .. I wonder if Sir Kier
has read any of this book?

*** I hope I am not offending any Jews or Muslims in
my reference to “The Book” and their scriptures.

  • The enormous amount of time and attention Starmer is giving to the Jewish ‘community’ must be worthy of comment, surely.

Obviously much of this relates to his Zionist credentials and to carrying on with the fiction of the antisemitism ‘crisis’ under Corbyn and its continuing weaponisation against the left and indeed it’s being deployed to block left candidates from MP selection longlists.

But politically he’s also crossing over to sit alongside Jewish groups dominated by Tories, so he’s pandering to the right both domestically and with his Zionism.

While he has interest in Judaism given his family, this would be something one would keep fairly private in conventional politics. What we have is cynical philosemitism that demeans his office.

  • I watched the video and agree it says nothing at
all really. Its a bit like characterising Roman Catholics
by the possession of Rosary beads and incense –
    and only that.

Surely it is a very superficial view of Jude-ism which –
as the scriptures stress – had at its centre views
on Justice, compassion etc important to most in
Society including all the main religions. The prophets
had some very severe views on those who oppress
    and bully.

I thought though that it was a bit unfair to stereotype the
family as one of the pair did – we don’t know them at all
or their views on TV, Electronic games etc .. No doubt
they have acquired their views on Corbyn via the MSM
and have seen little to challenge them .. A discussion
would provide more information than the Starmer
    video ..

Obviously it is the MSM which should be the medium
of such a conversation – and Starmer should be central
to it .. but that is obviously not the view of Starmer.
    .. …
Which is the problem really ..

  • Like Margaret West, I struggled to watch Starmer’s obsequious, sycophantic, insincere and unconvincing offerings. Since he (afaik) doesn’t produce similar videos at Easter, Ede/Ramadan or Diwali I can only assume he sees Judaism in a different light. It’s possible that he wishes to convert, but I feel it more likely that he (or the spin doctor who dreamt up these stunts) actually believes the trope that Jewish people are involved in a conspiracy to dominate the World and these are designed to curry favour. What has the Labour Party become?

  • The point is that conversion must mean that he is
converted to a FAITH of Judaism and “the book”
shared by Jews, Christians and Muslims. Starmer is
an atheist and does not even believe in God! The
ceremonies which Starmer took part in are based
on biblical incidents – I don’t think God was mentioned
once in the whole series of videos. There is a difference between taking part as a gesture of solidarity and taking
part as a person of faith.

If you are considering what Judaism means you should
surely start with the faith part. The difference I indicated
in the first paragraph should have been the subject of
a question from the JC reporter in that interview.

  • Only just caught up with this. I liked it a lot. Very funny. Only Alexei Style has made me laugh about Starmer before this. Starmer is not at all funny; he’s a horror but it’s good to laugh at him instead of feeling furious. Thank you.
