I am reminded of the pilot episode of the West Wing (which I’ve just watched again – thank you!) in which character Mary Marsh of the Christian right uses the term “New York sense of humour” as a slur to mean Jewish, something not picked up by anyone in the room except Toby Ziegler, not even by the Jewish Josh Lyman to which it was addressed. Interesting to note this was something dealt with in the very first episode.
