“Judaism,” says Rabbi Brant Rosen in his New Year message, “is deeply rooted in multiple cycles, actually: daily, weekly and yearly rhythms that revolve around each other simultaneously.”

But what does it mean to affirm a cyclical worldview in the era of global climate change, as apocalyptic, end-of-days thinking becomes ever more prevalent?

When we engage in such thinking, we reduce the climate crisis to a singular future cataclysm, while clinging to the illusion that everything is still somehow “normal.”

In reality, the climate-change apocalypse many fear is already underway, the product of other, extensive crises as well.

Recognising this, argues Brant, “reminds us there is still a great deal we can – and must – do.”
