No consequences for Israel’s atrocities despite US Leahy Laws

A classified U.S. government report has acknowledged the scale of Israeli human rights abuses in Gaza but, the Washington Post reports, sanctions which should result are unlikely to be applied.
The Leahy Laws are supposed to impose consequences on foreign military units that receive US funding and commit extrajudicial killings, torture and other atrocities. Their effectiveness in the case of Israel’s actions is in doubt, given that the review processes are “deferential to the Israel Defense Forces”, the Post article says.
It quotes Josh Paul, a former State Department official and critic of U.S. policy in the Middle East, saying: “To date the U.S. has not withheld any assistance to any Israeli unit despite clear evidence.”
