Israel’s forthcoming elections – why defeating Netanyahu is not good enough

JVL Introduction

Susie Becher writes here about the forthcoming Israeli parliamentary elections on 27 October in which, if the polls are correct, the coalition and opposition blocs are running neck and neck.

Passions are running extremely high but it is hard to know what is really at stake.

As Becher argues, “the so-called opposition bloc does not differ significantly from its opponents on the existential issues that threaten Israel’s future”. There is perhaps a choice between two blocs that differ primarily on domestic issues but, on what really matters, “no one is challenging the premise that military prowess and territorial depth are the key to Israel’s security”.

Only the parties representing the Palestinian citizens of Israel stand as potential counterweight. Becher may be clutching at straws, but believes that a substantial parliamentary representation for them could perhaps make it hard for the opposition bloc to discount them.

Defeating Netanyahu Is Not Good Enough

  • When you create ‘Nations’ you create an ideology of common language, history etc. Most Nations are created on myths. Nations are indoctrinated into that thinking without question (bar the minority).
Israel does it a little differently by using religious interpretation to control a narrative of its existence alongside the Holocaust. It is the imagined community. It doesn’t matter if the people are not directly linked to these events, the idea is to believe it.
Why did so many people follow Jim Jones and end up dead in Guyana? Why did People follow Hitler, Idi Amin, South Africa -Apartheid, Slavery…even Rasputin!
Zealot and fervent belief in something however tenuous allows and gives a green card for atrocities and in some cases ‘divine’ and ‘chosen people’.
Radical change yes but how do you change the thinking of the people that have indoctrinated or do not want to THINK beyond that indoctrination?
It cane done but it takes people and communities talking and listening to each other. Facts v Fiction.
