Israel’s assassination of memory

JVL Introduction

Israel is paving the way for new Jewish colonies in Gaza, says Chris Hedges, committing Nazi-like atrocities against the Palestinians on the way.

And the West sits by and wrings its hands, drawing the lesson from the Holocaust “Never Again – but we don’t care”.

The Gaza City Hedges lived in is already no more while Israel plans its final levelling to the ground.

It is all part of a campaign of erasure of memory and of history, Gaza’s history but also that of the state of Israel.

For says Hedges:

History is a mortal threat to Israel. It exposes the violent imposition of a European colony in the Arab world. It reveals the ruthless campaign to de-Arabize an Arab country. It underscores the inherent racism towards Arabs, their culture and their traditions… It mocks the lie that Palestine is exclusively a Jewish homeland. It recalls centuries of Palestinian presence…

Israel is bent on banishing history and critical intellectual inquiry, celebrating magical thinking instead.

It is destroying itself as well as Gaza.

Israel’s assassination of memory

Israel’s razing of Gaza is not only about ethnic cleansing. It is about the erasure of a people, a culture and a history that expose the lies used to justify the Israeli state.

  • Memory is, of course, very important.

Hitler looked at the genocide of Armenians and was inspired by it:

At the conclusion of his Obersalzberg Speech on 22 August 1939, a week before the German invasion of Poland, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler reportedly said “Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?” (German: Wer redet heute noch von der Vernichtung der Armenier?).
