Inner strength, integrity and principle – thanks Jeremy!
JVL Introduction
David Rosenberg, who has known Jeremy Corbyn and worked with him over many decades, pays tribute to him as he steps down as leader.
Hats off to a person of conviction, integrity and principle, who both brought a new generation of young people into a shared struggle for a better world and re-inspired socialists of older generations, appalled by the Blairite years.
There is a world to win!

I thoroughly endorse this view of Corbyn as a principled leader. If I have issues with the detail of strategy and tactics, I doubt that anyone could have coped better with the unprecedented personal (and lying) antagonism that was thown at him with the active connivance of the entire media from Private Eye to the Telegraph.
What I find harder to forget is the overall compliance of the Labour Party in validating the corrupt agenda of the Board of Deputies and fellow travellers. Not only did the MSM blank the voluminous contrary evidence – the majority of Party spokespersons, official and unofficial, went along with the mythology. The exceptions – like Marc Wadsworth, Jackie Walker and Chris Williamson were summarily thrown under the bus driven by (let’s not wrap it up) liars.
Sadly, the leadership election hasn’t resulted in a return to honesty, proportionality and courage. Starmer’s initial utterances have continued the shameful obeisance to the Israel lobby and its deep roots in the right.
I am constantly bewildered by this ridiculous notion that a loser should ‘fall on his sword’. Corbyn is no loser. He was painted as that by a media owned by a terrified establishment including the right of the Labour Party. Why on earth couldn’t he just have stayed and fought on. I am already seeing heartbroken young socialists threatening to desert the party now the new leaders have emerged. Where were those socialists when the party needed them? Surely there were enough to keep the leadership left wing. We need Corbyn more than ever now. Now that the tories have had to resort to socialist policies to keep us safe and well. I pray that one day Corbyn will be back and that those young socialists will keep faith and fight again.
Yes, and those qualities are already badly missed. Jeremy Corbyn’s successor has already signalled his willingness to break bread with the Tories.
I voted RLB and Burgon but the sheer speed – almost indecent – of the Labour Party’s shift to the right and towards Blairism and coalition with the Tories has been amazing. Not even 24 hours have elapsed.
Formal “National Government” or informal non-aggression pact, we still don’t know how it will pan out but some sort of treacherous “arrangement” looks ever more likely in the current Covid-19 crisis.
Just listen to the noises coming out of the Tories. They desperately want Labour to prop them up. Having made a godawful shambles of everything – and started creating what appear to be mass hospices in our major cities – the execrable oaf in No.10 is issuing invitations to talks. A 1931-style betrayal re-run? Already being mooted on the BBC’s 5 Live.
Labour should be working to bring this grossly incompetent No.10 windbag and his government of baboons down, not prop it up.
Jo Bird got excellent results but sadly was not elected to the EC. Throughout, she was the best candidate in the whole election by a mile. Honest, courageous, principled and a real socialist, her voice is needed more than ever to contest and slam the party’s already evident drift to perfidy.
Commiserations, Jo.
Thank you JVL. You are a light in the darkness of half truths and sheer lies.
We have to accept he was too nice to try and stamp out the Labour right when he had the power and instead let them destroy him. You have to be ruthless when needed. I also wish we’d heard from his wife, Laura Alvarez, who only now has found her voice. Having said that we were clearly hopelessly ill prepared for the 2019 election and given that JC was never going to confront the smears he should have stepped down for a younger more aggressive leader and a pro-Brexit strategy sorted out.
Thank you so much for sharing this David. We need to keep standing up and speaking the truth – those who want to will hear it.
geoff, so you pray that one day Jeremy will be back……. back where? Are you having some fantasy about him somehow being elected leader of the LP again in years to come? I mean it’s not going to happen of course, but would you REALLY wish for him to be back in the same position again being vilified and demonised and smeared and abused on an almost daily basis, week after week, month after month after month? Give the guy a break for heavens sake, and show him some respect.
RH As I said to you some hours ago on skwawkbox when you said the same thing, Starmer and the BoD and the JLM et al are all on the same page, and to think otherwise is naive. And THAT’s one thing you’re not! And, as such, ‘courage’ (lack of) and ‘obeisance’ don’t enter into it. As for the MSM blanking the contrary evidence (re A/S smears), it was the corporate – and I stress CORPORATE – media and the semi-corporate BBC who conspired in, and were complicit in the whole black op smear campaign against Jeremy and the left membership and enabled it from the outset, so of course they blanked the contrary evidence. THAT is obviously inherent in a smear campaign, and goes without saying.
dave, the forces ranged against Jeremy (and his allies) weren’t just the Labour right…… it was the whole of the Establishment and their propaganda machine – ie the corporate MSM and the BBC -, along with the Jewish newspapers, the BoD, the JLM, the LAA, the CAA, the CST, the Israeli Lobby, as such, the Tory Party and the LibDem leadership. When the great majority of the PLP are on the right of the party, there is no possible win situation if you are ruthless. I mean just look what happened when the LP were planning to take disciplinary action against Margaret Hodge for abusing and insulting Jeremy. In such a situation just about any sanctions against this or that plotter would backfire on you big time, and the unspoken threats were hanging there in the air constantly, and the saboteurs revelled in it. And why on earth do you criticise his wife. It really is like you are trying to find anything you can think of – however spurious – to criticise the LP and JC about. Even his wife! And who says the LP were hopelessly ill-prepared for the GE, hmm, just YOU, yet again concocting faults where there were none. Of COURSE they were prepared for a GE…… they’d been anticipating one for the previous year or more. Funny how they were very much prepared in 2017, isn’t it, and came very close to pulling it off.
And you can’t confront the smears – and ESPECIALLY the A/S smears – when the whole of the MSM is working to undermine you and sabotage your leadership, along with the Jewish newspapers and the BoD and the Israeli lobby and the Establishment. I mean where was this confrontation gonna take place, hmm? And I suppose the MSM et al were just gonna hold their hands up and say “OK, Jez, you got us….. it’s all been one big smear campaign, we own up, it woz us wot done it, so please stop confronting us otherwise we’re gonna cry”.
Gordon Bennett, please get real guys!
