Control over water resources has always been a key element in Israel’s strategy for the region. Taking over such resources – or destroying them – to undermine the life of local communities has long been a weapon deployed across the West Bank.
So too in Lebanon, where Israel has had its eye on the Litani River from early Zionist days.
Lebanon is grappling with the fallout from climate change, declining rainfall, and growing demand on its water supplies.
It is not alone. Growing water pressure in the region seems to have fed Israel’s expansionist ambitions.
Israel’s recent strike close to the Qaraoun Dam, the largest water installation in Lebanon, has highlighted its importance, and that of water more generally, to Lebanese life and economic security.
