Corbynism and Chanukah: A Response to Joe Glasman

JVL Introduction

The Campaign Against Antisemitism is supposedly a charity but it is hard to think of a more politically interventionist factional organisation – as exemplified by Joe Glasman’s video after the election.

Deborah Maccoby takes one of Glasman’s accusations – that while lighting Chanukah candles each year Jeremy Corbyn knows nothing about Chanukah – and shows how distorted an effort it is to use the Maccabean rededication of the temple to justify Israel’s nationalistic, militaristic claim of sovereignty over Occupied East Jerusalem.

Unlike the militaristic reading, writes Maccoby, “Corbyn’s Chanukah message this year correctly puts all the emphasis on the miracle of the oil and the message of hope amid darkness conveyed by the lighting of the candles.”

  • Judaism, Christianity, Islam (and that’s just this group of interlinked belief systems ) : all are subject to the political process of myth and symbolism (which may contain historical nuggets) being claimed for political ends and accordingly fictionalised as immutable history.

  • John C your comment is ignorant, puerile and facetious.
Religious Zionists read the Torah every week in a place known as a Synagogue. They not only study Torah but the entire Tanach together with all the commentaries.
I bet you have never read The Gemorah nor The Mishnah nor heard of it .
Have you heard of The Tanach ??
Your biased comment exposes you as a troglodyte
Jewish learning extends beyond The Torah but I wouldn’t expect you to know that !!

  • John C I agree with Rafi in that your comment is ignorant and a generalisation of huge proportions.
Your smug comment sounds like a self righteous speech of a callow youth
