Board of Deputies of British Jews apologises for calling journalist an ‘asshole’

JVL Introduction

Someone, working for the Board of Deputies of British Jews thought it appropriate to say that Jewish journalist Rachel Shabi’s comment on Holocaust education was “chutzpah” and to call her an “asshole” on the Board’s twitter feed.

Someone else at the Board of Deputies of British Jews realised that this was a peculiarly foolish and offensive thing to do and said the tweet had been “issued in error”, took it down, and apologised.

But as Shabi was quick to point out, it gave no explanation as to how this could possibly have happened. Obviously someone in authority at the BoD must think this is fair comment.

Does the Board really think this can just be swept under the carpet?

We repost a good account form the Guardian but wonder why the paper did not think it relevant to point out that Rachel Shabi is a much-respected Jewish journalist.

  • It is odd that the Guardian neglected to mention that Shabi is herself Jewish which surely the BoD would have known. Can only imagine that they were wary of making BoD look even worse. Shabi’s book ‘Not the Enemy: Israel’s Jews from Arab Lands’ is probably not one of their favourites….

  • Why did the Guardian article not mention that Rachel Shabi was Jewish? Is there perhaps the smidgeon of an idea that having a representative of the Board of Deputies trolling a Jew would not sit well with the image of an organisation that supports and has the support of all Jews?
