The Israel flag is showing up in all kinds of places, in the US and elsewhere, as the go-to symbol of aggressive and xenophobic ethno-nationalists and White Supremacists

Surely, asks Lawrence Davidson, this identification of demonstrably racist Western right-wing movements with the Israeli state is a serious misinterpretation?

Unfortunately not, he argues.

Whatever the liberatory impulses that drove so many to support Zionism as a liberatory movement, for Davidson “present-day Israel came about in a predetermined way flowing from Zionism’s initial assumptions.”

Wherever there are white nationalists, Christian nationalists, or just nationalist thugs in suits, the Israeli flag has become a symbol for their own hopes and dreams.
