Israel’s illusion of normality collapses: May 2021

JVL Introduction

For a long time, the Israeli state and Israeli Jews in general have felt on top of the world.

Despite the occasional discomfort and even the odd war they have increasingly come to believe that things are going their way.

They could make themselves believe that the world had grown tired of worrying about their breaches of international law, and that the dispossession of the Palestinians was a fait accompli with even the Palestinians becoming reconciled to their fate.

Not any more.

The Palestinians have struck back, and Israel is now facing a united Palestinian nation.

The danger inherent in this situation is that Israel will try, if and when possible, to complete the ethnic cleansing it embarked on long ago.

Israel sees the West and the other Arab countries, even when faced with this deepening crisis, seemingly unable to draw a line in the sand.

“What more,” asks the author,” is needed for an urgent, principled political intervention on behalf of the Palestinians, forcing Israel into a just peace in the Middle East?”
